DEMOCRACY

  • Meaning of the word is literally "rule by the people" and it comes from Greek language
  • Democracy is a form of government in which supreme power is vested in the people and they can exercise it both directly and indirectly
    • DIRECT DEMOCRACY:
      • Pure democracy
      • The public participates in government directly, there is no intermediary in the decisions
    • INDIRECT DEMOCRACY:
      • Democracy thru representatives
      • Developed during the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment
      • Nearly all modern Western-style democracies function as some type of representative democracy
      • The power of the representatives is usually curtailed by the constitution or other measures

DEMOCRACY HAS COME TO IMPLY:

  • Universal suffrage
  • Competition for office

HUMAN RIGHTS

  • The creation of human rights can be held as one of the greatest achievements by the United Nations
    • Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948
    • Nearly every state in the world has accepted the Declaration
    • It has been translated into more than 500 languages
  • One factor behind the development of human rights is the pursuit of freedom protection for slaves, women and disabled people
  • Human rights are rights that we have because we exist as human beings
    • They apply to everyone, regardless of where you are from, what nationality, color, religion, language or ethnic origin do you represent
  • Human rights can never be taken away, but they can be restricted (by breaking the law or if necessary because of national security)

SOME BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS:

  • Right to life
  • We are all free and equal
  • Freedom of speech
  • You have the right to get educated

HUMAN RIGHTS ARE NEEDED TO:

  • Help us create the kind of society we want to live in
  • Promote justice and everybody's well-being
