Using the Right Tense. When you talk about what is happening now or what will happen, you need to use the correct verb tense.
For current events (things happening now), use:
- Present simple: “The school opens at 8 AM.”
- Present continuous (for actions still happening): “People are watching the news about the storm.”
For future plans, use:
- “Going to” when the plan is already decided: “I’m going to visit my cousin this weekend.”
- “Will” when you decide now or make a promise: “I will help you with your homework.”
Present continuous for fixed plans:
- “We are having a test tomorrow.”
These tenses help the listener understand when things are happening—now or later.
